My Gear Series: Carabiners
As you can see in the picture, I use carabiners for a lot of things. They work well for securing your gear in case of a capsize and are commonly used with rescue equipment. I've tried a few different types, but for my purposes I prefer the oval type with a non-locking straight gate. They have been the most reliable for me. Although saltwater and sand can make any carabiner stiff, I've had trouble with screw-lock and wiregate types binding rendering them useless. I had to use tools to free the mechanism and lubricate them. I have mostly Black Diamond and Omega brands. I've also used the Omega carabiners while working in a test lab where they were subjected to hundreds of pounds of pulling force and never had a failure.
